Chinese knot workshop
August 7 @ 19:00 - 20:30
| £55.00In this hands-on workshop, we will explore the intricate and symbolic world of traditional Chinese knots. More than just a decorative art, Chinese knotting carries meanings of unity, good fortune, and heartfelt blessings. These handmade knots have long been used as talismans, ornaments, and tokens of affection.
You’ll start with basic knotting techniques such as such as lucky knot, plum knot and Double mandarin teal knot. Step by step, you’ll create your own meaningful piece — a bag charm — infused with your own intention and creativity.
Guest/Speaker Profile:
YI CRAFTS is an east Asian handcrafts studio based in northwestern London founded in 2019. Its focus is on the beautiful but vanishing traditional handcrafts and cuisine of China’s minority ethnicities. Intercultural sharing is constant and often unconscious throughout our daily lives, and hand crafts are the physical embodiment of culture and cultural sharing. Founder Yiran is a member of Bai ethnic minority, and she has experienced the great diversity within the UK and London, but I have found that the diverse cultures of China’s numerous ethnic minorities are underrepresented, with ‘China’ viewed as a single cultural source. The opportunity to introduce and share the unique and sometimes surprising customs, traditions and practices of her home province inspires her. It provides the chance to understand both commonalities and differences in culture, and to understand our shared history.

About Chinese Culture Week
Chinese Culture Week is an intercultural initiative that brings Chinese artists, creators, educators, and performers to one of the world’s largest arts festivals—the Edinburgh Fringe. First launched in 2024, CCW is designed not just as a showcase, but as a platform for meaningful cultural dialogue between China and the rest of the world. Through theatre, exhibitions, workshops, and live performances, CCW offers a rare opportunity to experience Chinese culture not as a monolith, but as a dynamic, evolving conversation.
CCW is curated and produced by the Intercultural Connections Initiative (ICI), a Scotland-registered community interest company dedicated to fostering cultural exchange through the performing arts. ICI is led by a young and international team of cultural producers, educators, and creative strategists, with roots in both East and West. Together, they bring a fresh perspective to global cultural engagement—one grounded in empathy, innovation, and long-term partnership.
