In this workshop, we’ll explore the flowing energy of Chinese calligraphy together with the hidden language of Western mystical symbols.
Inspired by ancient Daoist talismans and your own inner symbols, you’ll learn to combine traditional brush techniques with visual storytelling from both Eastern and Western cultures — from alchemy signs and runes to protective marks and intuitive strokes.
By the end of the session, you’ll create your own unique totem artwork, blending personal meaning with cross-cultural wisdom. Each piece will be painted on beautifully textured Chinese xuan paper and carefully framed — a powerful piece to take home and cherish.
Come with curiosity. Leave with a symbol of your spirit.

About the Artists:

MO is a creative duo founded by two artists from the University of the Arts London. Based in London, they love bringing the quiet beauty of Chinese traditions into modern design—finding gentle ways to connect making with feeling, and hands with the body.
They believe making isn’t just about creating things—it’s a way of thinking, and sometimes, a soft way of speaking. Each piece they create is a chance to pause, look inward, and make sense of emotions. For them, culture isn’t something distant—it’s something you can feel, wear, and carry with you in everyday life.

About Chinese Culture Week

Chinese Culture Week is an intercultural initiative that brings Chinese artists, creators, educators, and performers to one of the world’s largest arts festivals—the Edinburgh Fringe. First launched in 2024, CCW is designed not just as a showcase, but as a platform for meaningful cultural dialogue between China and the rest of the world. Through theatre, exhibitions, workshops, and live performances, CCW offers a rare opportunity to experience Chinese culture not as a monolith, but as a dynamic, evolving conversation.

CCW is curated and produced by the Intercultural Connections Initiative (ICI), a Scotland-registered community interest company dedicated to fostering cultural exchange through the performing arts. ICI is led by a young and international team of cultural producers, educators, and creative strategists, with roots in both East and West. Together, they bring a fresh perspective to global cultural engagement—one grounded in empathy, innovation, and long-term partnership.
